BASTROP, TX – A five-year-old boy succumbed to fatal injuries after the school bus he was on was struck by a cement truck on Highway 21 Friday.
This collision happened around 2 p.m. when the driver of the cement truck swerved into the school bus’ lane. CBS Austin confirmed that the 44 students on the bus (which included the boy) were coming from the Capital of Texas Zoo. Authorities said that all of the Tom Green Elementary students were taken to a hospital and have been released. The teacher with them was also hospitalized and is currently recovering.
The bus driver also sustained injuries and is recovering at home, but it is unclear if he was taken to a hospital.
In addition, authorities did reveal that a driver behind the school bus — 33-year-old Ryan Wallace — had also passed away.
Our newsroom has declined to mention the boy’s name in this article due to his status as a minor.
