News: APD, Union Pacific dispatched to train derailment crash in downtown Austin 

DOWNTOWN AUSTIN, TX – Austin Police and Union Pacific were summoned to the scene of a train derailment crash that occurred in downtown Austin on Thursday.

News4SanAntonio said the incident unfolded after 4:30 a.m., when seven intermodal cars fell off the 230-car cargo train, causing the train to leave the rails and crash. Those cars overturned, spilling out medical supplies and paper products. Police confirmed no hazardous materials were on board and no one was injured.

Officials closed Bowie and West 3rd Streets, and Altorf Street and Mary Street.

Austin Transportation and Public Works, and the Texas Railroad Commission were also called to the scene.

It’s not immediately clear what caused the intermodal cars to fall off the freight train. We will issue updates after more details surface.
