News: Driver comes forward after fatal hit-and-run collision in downtown Austin

AUSTIN, TX – A 28-year-old woman has turned herself in following a hit-and-run pedestrian crash in downtown Austin that claimed the life of a 20-year-old woman, reports CBS Austin.

The Austin Police Department confirmed that the alleged driver surrendered to authorities on Tuesday, May 20, in connection to the fatal incident that occurred on May 11, in the 700 block of East 7th Street at about 5:00 a.m.

Officials say the 28-year-old woman was behind the wheel of a car–believed to be a blue sedan–that struck three pedestrians before she left the scene, continuing on the northbound I-35 frontage road without stopping.

While two pedestrians, both men, sustained minor injuries in the incident, the third pedestrian, the 20-year-old woman, suffered critical injuries that left her brain dead. The victim’s family confirmed that on May 16, she was taken off life support and was pronounced deceased.

Charges against the 28-year-old driver include collision involving death and collision involving injury.

The APD’s Vehicular Homicide unit continues to investigate.
