News: Gas leak emerges from Austin apartment complex after crash 

CENTRAL AUSTIN, TX – A gas leak emerged from the Le Med Apartment Homes after a truck crashed into 16 unit buildings on Wednesday.

The incident unfolded after 11:15 p.m. on 1200 West 40th St, KXAN reports. The gas leak came from 15 of those units, forcing their residents to evacuate.

The truck driver themselves were uninjured and received medical treatment, although their pickup truck was completely destroyed. Austin Police did not specify what exactly caused them to plow into the building, although they confirmed they won’t face any charges.

Texas Gas Service shut off the gas to the damaged line (0wned by the apartment complex). It’s unclear how long it will take the building management team to get the repairs going and how long it will take to get a city inspection. Regardless, once they are completed, the gas service team can safely resume gas service to the building, according to gas service personnel.

Officials did inspect for structural integrity and only allowed for a moderate portion of residents to return to their abodes, except for those who were left with the damaged units.
