AUSTIN, TX – Police have apprehended a suspect in a violent East Riverside hit-and-run that left a bicyclist seriously injured over the weekend, Fox 7 Austin reports.
According to police, 34-year-old Jose Alberto Torres was arrested after a seven-mile high-speed chase in East Austin on Tuesday night. He is believed to be the driver who struck a bicyclist from behind in the 2300 block of the westbound E. SH 71 service road early Sunday morning.
Surveillance footage from a nearby building appears to show the driver attempting to strike the bicyclist again before fleeing.
The bicyclist was transported to a nearby hospital with multiple leg fractures.
Investigators were able to locate Torres after discovering the 2024 Dodge Ram 1500 he allegedly committed the hit-and-run in was stolen. The vehicle’s owner used the truck’s Sirius XM radio to determine Torres’ location.
Torres has been charged with multiple felonies, including second-degree felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He is set to appear in court on September 9.
