AUSTIN, TX – A 24-year-old man was said to have been impaired when he crashed a stolen orange 2015 Dodge Dart into an unmarked police vehicle, leading the officers to sustain injuries.
This collision happened before 8:30 a.m. Sunday at the East Oltorf Street and South Congress Avenue intersection, according to CBS Austin. Police said the 24-year-old man was going anywhere between 50 to 60 mph when he hit the patrol car with its flashing lights. The patrol car sustained damage to the passenger side, and the officers suffered wrist, back, and glute pain. Authorities said the unmarked cruiser was there to prevent traffic from coming into the roads used for a running marathon.
After the man — Diego Perez-Ayala — hit the cruiser, he then rammed into a power pole, which caused it to descend. Perez-Ayala tried to flee the scene but was arrested.
Perez-Ayala exhibited signs of intoxication — bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and the smell of alcohol. He took a preliminary breath test and was over twice the legal limit at 0.208. He is in custody, and his bail is set at $46,000.
